Conclusion

Forgiveness is an invaluable key to healing. It is a vital part of your freedom in each of the areas we’ve talked about—healing from trauma and unmet expectations, curses and vows, addictions, and anger. It’s a necessary part of your journey, not only because the chains of unforgiveness weigh you down along the way, but also because you’re not walking the journey alone. We may start as individuals, but we end up as one—one body—one pure and spotless bride. And if we have unforgiveness toward one another, we can never be one as He prayed we would be in John 17:21.

When you learn not only to forgive others, but also to live forgiven (which means you have forgiven yourself), you will experience God’s healing, His peace, His joy, and His abundant life in ways that you never thought possible. You will find a new grace for the journey. You’ll find new strength and energy and motivation.

We challenge you to spend some time going through the Next Steps in this section before moving on. Ask the Lord what He wants to reveal to you about your past. Ask Him what He wants to heal, what lies He wants to set straight, what deadly patterns He wants to break in your life. Ask Him to forgive you and to help you forgive.

Getting through your past and being free from it is fundamental to walking out God’s will in the present. You’ll never be able to receive your true identity or live in the abundant life God is offering you if you’re still hanging onto lies and unhealed hurt from your past. It’s not an easy part of the journey by any means, but if you will trust God to let you hurt, and if you will yield to His yoke as He leads you through the valley, He will bring you to an open pasture of freedom on the other side.
